Product Info
Royal Canin Anallergenic is a dry food formulated to manage severe adverse food reactions in cats.
Food adverse reactions are believed to be responsible for at least 20% of skin allergy cases in cats. For causes of skin allergy dermatitis, food allergy is ranked third after flea allergy and atopic dermatitis (airborne allergies).
Signs of a Food Adverse Reaction:
It is a common misconception that food allergies and sensitivites in cats are due to additives or preservatives. Adverse reactions, or food allergies, in cats are most commonly caused by a protein contained in a food that they have eaten for a long period of time. An abnormal response from the immune system causes it to become reactive to the proteins in the food. As the food is digested by the body, protein molecules react with receptors on immune cells, which trigger an allergic response.
The food ingredients that are most commonly associated with adverse reactions in cats are fish, dairy, wheat, lamb, chicken, egg and soy.
Diagnosing food allergy in cats can be difficult as there are no accurate laboratory tests available. Instead, food allergies are diagnosed by a food elimination trial. This means that the cat is fed a diet with a novel (new) or hydrolysed protein and starch source for a period of time, generally a minimum of 8 weeks. A hydrolysed protein is a protein that has been treated by a process called hydrolysis to break it into smaller molecules that do not react with receptors on the cells of the immune system, therefore they cannot trigger an allergic response. If the symptoms reduce or disappear on the elimination diet, a diagnosis of food allergy or intolerance can be made. To then determine what was causing the allergy, more proteins are slowly re-introduced one at a time to challenge the animal and see if they react. An alternative approach is just to continue feeding the diet used in the elimination trial for life, provided that it is complete and balanced and provides the cat with adequate nutrition.
Anallergenic is made from highly hydrolysed protein sourced from chicken feathers. Due to the very small size of the protein and its novel origin it is extremely unlikely to trigger a food allergy or adverse reaction. Anallergenic is manufactured under pharmaceutical grade conditions to ensure there is no cross contamination with other proteins and is allergen restricted. It is made using purified starch as a carbohydrate source to further reduce the risk of a reaction. It contains high levels of omega-3 and 6 fatty acids, as well as a patented skin barrier complex proven to help strengthen the skins natural barrier effect. Anallergenic also contains antioxidants for immune system support, and is a complete and balanced diet suitable for long term feeding if required.
